Case study: Instagram User Loses £17k In Scam
In an article on the BBC site, an Instagram user lost £17,000 in an investment scam on Instagram in 2021. He was duped by another user who posted pictures of himself in front of his gold sports car and professed that he was a self-made rich man.
Initially, he was convinced to install trading software to monitor his investment. After a £1,000 deposit, he saw signs that his investment was working. So much so that he eventually invested a total of £17,000.
After a while, he noticed his balance drop dramatically over a 2-day period. This led him to be concerned but, despite his efforts, he wasn’t able to withdraw the remainder of his money. Once the money had gone, he was unable to contact the fraudster. Unfortunately, this is the first time many people realised they’ve fallen victim to a scam.
Since 2021, banks have become more proactive at issuing warnings when you try to make a transfer from your account. In some cases, new reimbursement protections mean that victims of some scams are issued refunds by their banks.
