How Do I Report Fraud?

If you’ve been the victim of fraud, it’s important to inform the authorities. Here’s some advice on what to do:

Report to Action Fraud

Action Fraud (not to be confused with us) is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. Here’s what to do:

  • Visit their website: www.actionfraud.org.uk
  • Call their helpline: +1 (206) 609-6016 (available Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm).

When you speak with Action Fraud, you will need to explain:

  • What happened and when.
  • How you were approached (e.g., email, phone call, in person).
  • Any evidence you have (emails, receipts, messages).

Once you report the fraud, you’ll receive a reference number to track your case.

If You’ve Lost Money

  • Contact Your Bank Immediately – Inform them of the fraud. Banks often have fraud departments to assist or stop suspicious transactions.
  • Check Insurance – Some home or business insurance policies cover fraud-related losses.

If You’re in Immediate Danger or the Fraud is Happening Right Now

  • Call 999 immediately. This is for emergencies where someone is at risk, or a crime is actively happening.

Why Do I Need To Report Fraud?

Reporting fraud is essential to protect yourself and others from harm.

By reporting, you increase the chances of recovering stolen funds or assets and help prevent further damage, such as repeated targeting by fraudsters.

It also allows you to secure your identity and take steps to stop criminals from using your personal details for other fraudulent activities.

On a broader level, reporting helps authorities track, investigate, and prosecute fraudsters, reducing the risk for other potential victims. It enables law enforcement and organisations like Action Fraud to identify patterns, crack down on criminal networks, and issue warnings about common scams. Without reports, fraudsters remain free to exploit others.

Reporting also provides you with an official record, which is often needed for claims through banks or insurance providers. Ultimately, your action contributes to a safer, more accountable society while safeguarding your own interests.
